Karens Corner- Fall Break at The Oaks Course

I was sitting on my porch today watching every leaf and kid in my neighborhood falling in my yard whether they belonged to me or not. I forgot that is was fall break in Newton County. Every child in Newton County is out of school this week. I could swear that most of them were at my house and the least they could do was rake all the leaves they were bringing in from their homes. I guess that is asking a little too much.

Do you have the same situation at your house? I have the answer for you. Bring them to The Oaks golf course and let them hit a few golf balls on the driving range or practice their putting on the practice green. All kids have a great imagination and for just a little while, they can pretend to be Tiger Woods. The best part of childhood is dreaming of what they will someday be.

Can you think of a better way of spending the rest of their fall break? You get to watch your child’s imagination take off and they get to dream they could someday be the next champion on the pro golf circuit. We have watched a lot of kids grow up on The Oaks Course in the last 24 years and it still amazes me when one of them walks in the door and my eyes see and adult, but my heart still sees the child.

Bring your kids out to The Oaks Course today; let them be kids and dream of what they will be when they grow up. Time speeds by and one day they will be the adult I see when they walk in the door. I can’t wait to meet your kids. If they are here playing golf, they won’t be at my house playing in my leaves and not raking them.

Come Support the T.J. Hailey Tournament at The Oaks

This Saturday, October 25th, the T.J. Hailey Golf Tournament will be held at The Oaks Course. This tournament is held to raise money for the T.J. Hailey Scholarship, which is given by the Eastridge Community Church. They have given out 29 scholarships since they started the fund in 2003.

The scholarship was created as a remembrance of T.J. Hailey. The Eastridge Community Church and his friends and family established the fund in honor of him after his life was tragically cut short due to a car accident on March 26, 2003. They hope that T.J.’s life and memory will live on by helping others, just as he liked to do.

They hope to raise enough money at this tournament to fund at least two to three scholarships. That’s why we hope everyone can participate! There is no better reason to participate in a tournament than to raise money for a good cause.

The tournament is a 2-person scramble and it starts at nine in the morning. The cost is $100 per player and it includes golf price, breakfast, and mulligans.

Tommy Hailey, the father of T.J. Hailey, said “It’s a pleasure to do it (the tournament) at The Oaks. I had the opportunity to grow up caddying at the golf course. Dick has been good to us with this tournament and the tournaments we have had throughout the years. They always do things right and have a good course.”

We hope to see everyone out on The Oaks Course this Saturday to benefit this amazing event.

The Reasons Why You Should go to the Bill Taylor Golf Classic

The Newton Medical Center Auxiliary’s 24th Bill Taylor Classic Golf Tournament is only days away. Before the golf classic begins, we thought we would give you some of our favorite reasons why you should participate!

  1. All of the proceeds from the tournament benefit the Newton Medical Center. Over the 24 years the auxiliary has been hosting this event, the proceeds have allowed them to purchase a multitude of gifts; digital mammography, fetal monitoring and portable X-ray equipment.
  2. You don’t have to golf to participate! If you’re a business, the golf tournament offers many different levels of sponsorship. Businesses can also participate in the Health and Vendor Fair before the tournament begins.
  3. The afternoon is going to be fun-filled.  From the helicopter golf ball drop to the many activities that are planned, you’re guaranteed a great Friday afternoon.
  4. The temperature is going to be perfect. I can’t think of a better way to spend the day than playing a round of golf, eating homemade treats from the women of the auxiliary and raising money for a great cause!

We’re excited to be able to participate in this great event. Join us on the veranda, we will be the people sipping sweet tea and eating fried apple pies, like any respectable southern person should be doing on a beautiful day. See you Friday!

Karens Corner- What Tournament did Gary Qualify For?

Recently, our golf pro, Gary Miller, played in the Georgia PGA Professional Championship. He did an outstanding job and is advancing to the 2015 PGA Professional National Championship! We are really proud to say that we have such an amazing golf pro here at The Oaks Course.

Gary Miller is a member of the Georgia PGA. It is one of 41 sections of the PGA of America. It includes many of the PGA professionals who work at golf courses, clubs, and ranges throughout the United States. The Georgia PGA alone has 830 professionals that work at 260 different establishments. Usually, at least 20 Georgia PGA members will compete on one of the PGA Tours.

The PGA National Professional Championship began in 1968. It offered more opportunities to play for PGA professionals. Now, it is an event for PGA Professionals to show their talents.

This year the Georgia PGA Professional Championship was held at The Legends at Chateau Elan, and the winner was Phil Taylor. Taylor will advance to the 2015 PGA Professional National Championship in Philadelphia. Miller will also be advancing to the National Championship as well.

The next step is to be in the lowest 20th scorers at the PGA Professional National Championship. The lowest scorers will move onto the 97th PGA Championship in Kohler, Wisconsin.

If you see Gary Miller next time you visit The Oaks Course, make sure you tell him congratulations! We are proud of how much he has accomplished so far, and we can’t wait to see where he goes!

Join us for a Day of Fun at The Bill Taylor Golf Classic

The Bill Taylor Golf Classic is going to be a day so filled with fun; you will wish it was held every weekend. The Bill Taylor Golf Classic is held to raise money for the Newton Medical Center. Over the 24 years it has been held, a lot of money has been raised for the hospital. This has allowed them to buy equipment for digital mammography, fetal monitoring, and portable X-Rays.

While giving back to a good cause, you can participate in a lot of the fun games held at the golf classic. Some games that will be played include the circle contest, Yard Stick, and Pay the Pro.

While all those games are all fun, our favorite event is the golf ball drop. During the golf ball drop, a helicopter will drop 600 golf balls onto the course. If you have the first ball to drop into a hole you win the $500 prize. Tickets to participate in the golf ball drop are $10. It’s not every day that you get to see a helicopter over The Oaks Course. The excitement of the golf ball drop is what makes it our favorite.

If you’re looking for a fun way to get outdoors next weekend (October 17th), we suggest coming to the Bill Taylor Golf Classic. Not only will you be having the time of your life, but you will also be benefitting a good cause. It is only $160 to register for the tournament and of the proceeds goes to the Newton Medical Center. If you would like to register, please contact Andrea Lane, director of volunteer services, at (770)788-6553.
