Karens Corner- Why We Love Knickers at The Oaks Course

Rickie Fowler recently wore knickers in the U.S. Open to honor his idol, Payne Stewart. He has certainly caused a sensation in the golf world; as well as the rest of the population. Knickers have always been prominent in the history of golf. The reasons why are many, but here are a few that I found interesting.

  • Since the 17th century, people have been wearing knickers for various activities. They were very popular with one group of Dutch colonists. They quickly became popular when the New York Knickerbockers adopted them as part of their uniform in 1842. They became mainstream fashion after Edward VII wore them to the United States in 1924. It was then; they became a part of the golfing world. The style waned in the thirties, but now that Rickie has brought back the swagger in golf, we are sure to see more.
  • Knickers make a statement, a look that says “I know I’m good, and I am going to prove it to you.” Knickers have a loser fit that allows more mobility, that doesn’t exist in today’s golf fashion. The material of today is made to keep the golfer cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. It is a more comfortable fit, but it doesn’t have the flair of knickers, accessorized with a pair of argyle socks and a sweater.
  • The advantages of today’s knickers are at least you won’t pass out on the course with a heat stroke or have a rash from the wool of knickers of old. These are important facts, we want you to have fun, play well and put your swagger back in golf.

In the twenty or more years we have been in business, we have seen a wide variety of styles, but our favorite is the knickers. What’s your favorite style?  Let us know, we love hearing from our readers.
