Spring Scramble at The Oaks Course!

The Oaks Course is starting off the spring golf season right – they are hosting a Spring Scramble! If you have not had the chance to participate in a Spring Scramble before, now is the time to do so. This fun event will take place on March 28. The Spring Scramble is a two-person event and a great way to kick off the 2015 golf season.

Golf scrambles consist of two partners joining up for a round of golf. You and your partner will each have the opportunity to take a shot at the ball on each hole that you play. After you both take a shot at the hole, you can decide whose ball landed in a better location and then continue on to that spot on the course, where you will start the process again.

A golf scramble promotes teamwork and fun! With a partner, it is easier to shoot a better score. Golfing with a partner is also a great way to practice your game and learn a few new techniques from your partner along the way. A scramble emphasizes the actual game of golf, rather than individual scores – making the scramble all fun and leaving behind any pressure you may feel.

If you are interested in kicking off your 2015 golf season with The Oaks’ Spring Scramble you can sign up online here. The scramble will start bright and early at 9 a.m. and the deadline to sign up is Thursday, March 26.

Gary’s Tip: Attacking the Fairway Bunker

Spring is almost here; it’s time to sharpen your golf technique! One of the hardest shots to conquer in golf is a fairway bunker shot that is approximately 40 to 50 yards away from the green. This week, Gary Miller, our head golf professional, is offering some advice on how to attack this particular shot.

The trick to this shot is adjusting your normal bunker swing in order to get the ball further to the green. Although keeping your trusty bunker skills close is a smart move, you will want to use your 9-iron instead of your sand wedge in order to move the sand faster and farther.

When taking this fairway bunker shot be sure to turn through the shot like you would with an iron on the fairway; be sure you don’t dig your feet in the sand so you can better do this. Narrow your stance and make a full swing and a full release after you make contact with the ball. By keeping a narrow stance, you will produce a shallower divot and get the ball moving faster towards your target.

One of the most important things you can do in a shot like this is to make sure you produce a full finish; keep everything moving – your body, your arms and your club. Your stance is also critical in this shot. Be sure to keep it narrow, and because you won’t have a solid stance, keep your feet grounded as best as you can.

Head to The Oaks today to practice your fairway bunker shot for this upcoming golf season!
