Master Your Punch Shot at The Oaks!

Mastering every golf technique that you possibly can will work wonders in your golf game. We have previously reviewed techniques such as chipping, putting, positioning and putting. This week, The Oaks is offering advice on your punch shot. Your punch shot, like the many other shots you take during a match, can come in very handy!

The punch shot is a shot you would want to use when you find yourself below some low-hanging trees and want to keep your shot path as low as possible. Keeping your shot as low as possible in a situation such as this will reduce the chance of your ball getting caught in the branches of those trees. Getting caught in the branches, as you know, is a one-way ticket to a bogey or worse.

In order to use this shot technique correctly, you will need to use a long iron, such as a four or five iron. After choosing the right club, set the ball equal to your back foot and use your hands to choke down on the club farther than you normally would. Take a smooth, three-quarter-length swing at the ball – make sure it is no larger than that. Make sure to hit the ball with a downward, striking motion.

Using a punch shot can come in very handy when you are looking for a shot that will get you out of trouble and out from beneath the trees. Be sure to head to The Oaks to practice your punch shot this spring before golf season gets completely underway!

A Tip From The Oaks: Positioning

The Oaks has one more tip to offer to its fellow golf lovers! Deciding how exactly to handle your ball on the course can greatly affect the rest of your match that day. Golf is a game filled with decisions. Every shot, every stroke, is a decision that can impact the rest of your current hole or even your entire round.

Golf takes not only good technique, but a good mental mindset as well. During a match at The Oaks, you will likely find that a good swing alone will not give you the best result. It is better to mentally decide how you will approach the hole before swinging your club.

Deciding when to attack a tight fairway at The Oaks or a tucked away pin and when to layup or play towards the center of the green can make or break your golf game that day. It can be very tempting to first use your driver on every tee shot; however, that may not give you the result that you are looking for and you may end up in trouble.

For example, taking your driver to clear that creek crossing the fairway or trying to squeeze a shot between two deep bunkers can many times end in disaster. Instead, take a hybrid or a long iron and lay up before the hazards to leave yourself with a clear shot to the green instead of a trip to the beach or taking a penalty stroke out of the water. Positioning not only your shot, but your mindset, can result in a great golf match at The Oaks!
