Karens Corner- Cooler Corn Recipe

Cooler CornTailgating is one of America’s favorite pass times. There is always a reason to tailgate! It can be a sporting event or even just a community gathering. One of the best things about tailgating is enjoying the company of family, friends and maybe even strangers who share a common interest. Personally, my favorite thing about tailgating is getting to eat all of my favorite outdoor and barbequed foods.

Tailgating foods are better when they can be quickly prepared and eaten with little or no mess.  No one likes to spend extra time cleaning up! Our amazing Chef Kevin has a recipe that will have your taste buds screaming for more. The recipe is called “Cooler Corn”. It takes very little preparation and doesn’t need many supplies! To make Cooler Corn all you will need is a cooler with closeable lid, shucked corn on the cob, boiling water, and maybe even a few of your favorite spices like salt and pepper.

First, you place shucked corn on the cob in the bottom of cooler. Next, you add enough boiling water into the cooler to fully submerge the corn. Then, you let the corn sit in the cooler for 30 minutes with the lid closed. If desired you can add your favorite spices before you close the lid. Adding spices will give your corn a little extra kick.

After the 30 minutes is over the corn should be fully cooked and able to be enjoyed. Once the corn is done you can serve it with your favorite tailgating food like wings or another favorite grilled meat. We hope this recipe adds a little kick to your next tailgate. Who knows, maybe that tailgate will be our All American Tailgate event on July 18th

All American Tailgate

The Oaks Golf Course is excited to announce our family fun event the All American Tailgate. This event is perfect for bringing the whole family on, or maybe event date night for that special someone.  We have a lot of exciting plans for this show-stopping event!

We are going to be magically transforming a section of our course into a mini golf course! To add some excitement, the mini golf course is not going to like a traditional course. There will be no blow-ups; we will be using more of a nature perspective to our course. An example of something we might try to do would be having players putt through a fallen log.

We aren’t stopping the fun with just a course! We will also be grilling! Our master chef will be preparing hotdogs and hamburgers for the enjoyment of our participants.

There is no other way for children to play mini-golf within a 30-mile radius. We think mini-golf is fun for everyone to play, which is why we wanted to try out this event. If you come to the event and love it let us know! If the event is successful we will be sure to do it more often!

The All American Tailgate is going to be a fun family or date night event. It will be on Friday, July 18th so don’t forget to mark your calendars!  We know we will be having a fun night out putting around and we hope to see you there!

The Oaks New Industry League

Industry 9-Hole league

Are you sitting in your office wishing you were out on the green? We know work has to come first, that’s why we have come up with a plan to help you busy workers out! The Oaks golf course is proud to introduce our new Industry 9-Hole league.

We know that playing 18 holes after working would be way too long. That would take up your whole night! That’s why we are starting this 9-hole league. Now after a hard day at the office, you can visit The Oaks, relax, and then go home.

The league will be on Thursday evenings, and all you need is three other friends who want to play! Your foursome will be competing against other foursomes in the league.  Competitions will start on July 10, 2014.

The best part is the league is only $17 per person! We know after working all day the last thing you want to be thinking about is spending money. That’s why we are offering our best price yet for this league!

After being cooped up behind a desk all day, we imagine you need a little air. That’s what this league is for. Karen from The Oaks said “It’s a time to unwind, get together with other people who love to play and enjoy getting outside after a long day at work.”

Does this sound like the perfect way to end your workday? If it does, please contact Lisa Vaught, our golf professional. She will be able to give you more information about the league. You can contact her at (770) 786-3801. Get your team together soon! We can’t wait to see you on the green!

Golf and Fish at The Oaks!

The Oaks Golf and Fish event is any person's dream; it’s the perfect combination of golfing and fishing! Participants will have the chance to golf for two hours on nine of our beautiful holes. After that they will be invited to test their angling skills on one of our fish-filled ponds!

The golf portion of the event will be structured in a two-person scramble format and scored traditional tournament style, with each player trying to get the lowest score.

After calculating your golf score, you will then enjoy a relaxing round of fishing on our picturesque ponds. The Oaks golf course ponds are stocked with four different types of fish: bass, crappie, catfish and brim. We even have a special "monster" catfish, named Coco!

Coco is the biggest fish in the pond, and who ever catches her is sure to gain a huge advantage in the tournament! We can’t tell you what pond she is in, since she likes to move around. We think Coco might be one of those mysterious walking catfish; either that or she hitches rides in the golf carts at twilight! Coco the catfish is part of the history lore of The Oaks golf course and catching her will be as exciting as catching Bigfoot.

The winner of the tournament will be the person with the lowest total Golf and Fish score. To obtain the total Golf and Fish score, players will subtract the weight of their selected fish from their golf score to get their final score.

This is one of our favorite events of the year at The Oaks golf course, and we hope to see y’all there. Spaces are limited for this event, so register for Golf and Fish today!

Public Safety Rate

Golf at the Oaks Course with the New Public Safety Rate

The Oaks golf course is excited to announce its newest opportunity, The Public Safety Rate. This rate was created to thank the local fire, police, and Sheriffs department for protecting our community. The rate is for the departments in Newton County, Covington, Oxford, and Porterdale.

With the hard economy, we have heard of many departments getting budget cuts. Since those our words no one wants to hear, we thought we would create words people would want to hear!  That’s what we are doing with our new public safety rate. Nancy Schulz of The Oaks course said, “this is our way to support our people in uniform.”

If you’re a member of one of these departments you can enjoy a weekday rate of $25 plus tax. If you would like to golf with us on the weekends or holidays the rate is reduced to $35 plus tax.

If you need to distress after a strenuous working shift or escape from the pressures of protecting the public, visit us at The Oaks golf course. The scenic greens and fresh air are sure to help the most hardened worker relax.

The Public Safety Rate is for active personnel only and your ID is required to receive the rate. We are very thankful for everything you do around the County and we know it isn’t easy! We hope to be able to thank you for your service when we see you on the course soon!
