Meet Our New Golf Pro Gary Miller!

We are very proud to announce that we have hired a new golf pro at The Oaks Course! His name is Gary Miller and he is a golf fanatic. He has been in the golf business for 12 years and in 2007 he got his PGA designation.  He worked at Reynolds Plantation but now he is coming to join us at The Oaks Course.

Gary and his family have lived in Athens for 12 years. He has a wife named Ginger and two kids who are 10 and 6. His wife is a schoolteacher and she has taught basically every grade! This is her first year teaching EIP and she can’t wait to start.  Both of his kids are very active in sports, they even play golf! Gary enjoys teaching all kids golf.

He said, ‘‘the first time you see a kid hit the ball 100 yards and their eyes pop-open- I enjoy that.” We are excited to see the junior camps he starts and the young stars he will build! Gary isn’t only passionate about teaching golf! He is passionate about the sport as a whole.

Golf is a big passion of Gary’s. When asked why golf was his passion over other sports he responded, “It’s quiet and you’re in your own environment. It’s an individual sport and you don’t have to rely on a team. Also other sport fields are the same every time. Golf holes change from course to course.”

We are very excited to have Gary come work with us at The Oaks Course. Next time you come by to golf make sure to come in and introduce yourself. Make sure to be on the lookout! Soon we will be announcing events where you can meet our new golf pro.

Wedding Traditions at The Oaks Course

The Oaks Course is much more than just a place for playing golf.  It can also be an elegant wedding venue. Seeing our clubhouse transformed into a wedding venue is one of my favorite parts about working here at The Oaks Course.  Some families love the transformation so much that multiple members get married here!

That’s what the Ogburn family chose to do. Sammy and Anna Ogburn had their wedding reception at The Oaks on October 17th, 2005 in the Champions room. 9 years later, Sammy's sister Jennifer Ogburn married Chris Gyles and had their wedding reception at The Oaks as well.

Jennifer said she and her family loved having their events here at The Oaks Course. Her family created a special tradition for the receptions at The Oaks Course. The day before the wedding, the men in the wedding would play a round of golf at The Oaks. While they were playing, the women in the party would decorate the room for the reception.

Jennifer had a beautiful reception at The Oaks Course. Her reception was black and white with purple accents. She had four dozen white hanging lanterns hung from the ceiling. The varying height of the lanterns gave them a mystical feel. In the middle of all the lanterns was a sparkling round chandelier. It was so beautiful because it reflected all the silver and white accents.

Karen at The Oaks Course remembers Jennifer’s wedding. She said, “It was a beautiful reception. We love hosting wedding receptions here. There is always a refreshing atmosphere in the air because the couple is just starting their lives together and we love being a part of that.”

The Oaks loves to make its members a part of their family. If you want to have your next event at The Oaks Course, check out our banquet planner. We would love to see how your transform our Champion room!

Animals on The Oaks Golf Course

When you visit The Oaks golf course do you make new friends? I’m not talking about human friends; I am talking about furry friends! The Oaks course has had many animals come visit unsuspecting golfers.

To start out with our pond is stocked with many scaly swimmers. We have many crappie, bass, brim, and even a catfish! We have named the catfish Coco. She is very big and has been with us for so many years that she has her own back-story!

We also have had four-legged visitors too. Deer are often seen prancing around in the trees surrounding the golf course. We have even had a visit from some cows once! One time, a farmer’s cows got loose from his corral and came to pay us a visit. It wasn’t a relaxing day when we found them, but we think they enjoyed the course!

We have also had many feathered friends on the course. Beautiful cranes and blue heron can be seen stretching and strutting around our ponds. You can also watch many birds fly by if you sit on our porch and enjoy a lunch from Putters.

You wont only see flying birds. You will also see killdeer squawking around! Killdeer like to build nests and lay eggs on the sides of the course. If they feel their nest is threatened they lay over the nest and pretend to be dead! They are truly a fun bird to watch. We can’t name all the birds you would see because the list would go on forever, but we can say it would be a relaxing experience.

Have you visited The Oaks golf course and seen animals before? Let us know what you have seen! We might not know all the animals you have seen on the course. Plus we love hearing stories about our visitors!

Karens Corner- The Benefits of Golfing

Many people visit The Oaks golf course after a stressful work week. Golf is not only relaxing; it’s also very beneficial. I recently spoke with David The Oaks superintendent about the major benefits of golfing.

David said a major benefit of golfing is exercise. If you play golf regularly it can help you to stay fit, improve endurance, and lose weight! Golfing gets you outside and walking around. Even the smallest bit of exercise helps! If you hate going to the gym you should try visiting the golf course.

Another benefit David mentioned is that golf is a social sport.  If you find yourself only socializing at work, the golf course might be your solution! Golf is a great way to keep in touch with friends and catch up with old ones. Golf also helps to build a sense of community connectedness. Perhaps the next neighbor get- together could be a round of golf at The Oaks!

While all those are great, David thinks the biggest benefit of golf is etiquette. Golf teaches all players etiquette and common courtesy.  Young golfers are taught how to be courteous to others, truthful in recording their score and to leave the course the way they found it. If you want to raise your child with proper etiquette you might want to take them for a few rounds on the golf course.

Whether you’re looking for stress relief, exercise, a social outing, or some etiquette lessons, come join us at The Oaks golf course.

The Oaks Folklore- Coco the Catfish

This years annual Golf and Fish event at The Oaks course marks another where Coco the catfish went uncaught! We are beginning to wonder how this traveling catfish has evaded capture for so long. The lore of Coco the catfish goes way back in The Oaks course history.

Coco has been in our pond since she was a teeny baby catfish. Back then, we had no idea how big she would get! When Coco was little she would often get scared by the white golf balls zooming into her pond. This is why she stays close to the bottom of the pond. She feels a lot safer down there.

Coco grew up swimming happily through the murky water. She made many fish friends since crappie, bass, and brim also live in The Oaks ponds. However, over time she started getting a lot bigger than the other fish.

One day the dive guy (he saves the golf balls from the pond) noticed something strange! He thought Coco had moved from one pond to another. It is said that Coco could be a walking catfish. Maybe one night, she felt too small for her original pond and walked over to a new one!

I feel like the walk might be a bit long for a fish out of water. I think that Coco commandeered one of our golf carts and drove it over to the new pond! How else can you explain workers finding a golf cart out by different pond on random mornings?

The only way to truly find out the answer to Coco the Catfish’s lore is to catch her. We hope to see all the anglers out there at our next Golf and Fish event on September 14th, 2014. Hopefully there we can figure out the answers to the mystery of Coco the Catfish.
