Gary Miller's Top 3 Favorite Golf Movies

Our Golf Pro Gary Miller is passionate about golf. He is so passionate about it that he loves to watch golf as much as possible. We asked him what his favorite golf movies were and these are the top recommendations he gave us.

The Legend of Bagger Vance

bagger vanceGary said this is his absolute favorite golf movie. The movie has a legendary cast starring Matt Damon, Will Smith, and Charlize Theron. The movie has a little bit of something for everyone. It has a bit of war history, a love story, and major character growth. If you’re looking for a good date night movie this one is sure to please everyone.

Caddyshack

CaddyshackGary called Caddyshack the “gold standard of golf comedy.” After watching the movie, I promise it will have you rolling on the floor laughing! One of my favorite parts was the struggle between Carl (Bill Murray) and the gopher. If you think golf is boring, this movie will definitely change your feelings!

Happy Gilmore

happyGary said this was the “funniest one” on the movie list. Happy Gilmore stars Adam Sandler. He plays a rejected hockey player who starts playing golf to save his grandmothers house. While that sounds like a dramatic plot line, the movie is full of funny lines that lighten up the mood. This movie is a good one for a family night with kids over the age of 13.

If you don’t have time to make it out to the course today, try watching one of these movies. They might inspire the hidden top golfer in you to come out and play.

Karens Corner- 4 Unique Golf Tips

4 Golf Tips From Pro Gary Miller

From time to time we hear members at The Oaks ask how they can perfect their swing on the course. Here are some sure fire swing improvement tips from our new golf pro, Gary Miller, you might not have known about.

Fundamentals Are Key

To start, you must have your fundamentals nailed down. Make sure your grip, stance, and alignment are all in tune. This will help refresh your swing path and make the ball fly further.

Get With The Tempo

Next, you need to build on your swing path. Gary suggests making sure your tempo and swing path are aligned. "Everyone believes the harder you swing the further you hit the ball. That doesn’t always equate. Tempo is also a factor in distance.”

Timing Is Everything

Gary is a firm believer that your swing is all about timing. "Practice the tempo of your swing as often as possible. Once you get your tempo down you will have a much stronger swing."

There you have it. Three tried and true suggestions from our new golf pro, Gary Miller, to help improve your swing. Gary loves to help visiting golfers and loyal members get more out of their game. If you would like to get more tips from our new golf pro, come to our meet and greet on the driving range August 16th. Afterwards you can test them out on the golf course, then unwind at Putters and let us know if they helped you out!

Meet Sunshine The Oaks Favorite Killdeer

sunshinekilldeerAs we near the end of the summer months it becomes The Oaks favorite time of year. Not only is the weather cooling off for the perfect golf season, it is also one of our favorite birds hatching time. If you have golfed on The Oaks Course, you have noticed the killdeer nests. These precocious birds hatch in the summer months.

You might be wondering why these are our favorite birds on the course. We love them because of their funny habits. If you have ever gotten close to a killdeer nest you know what we are talking about!

Killdeer have a habit of playing dead and stretching over their nest to hide their eggs from predators. You can’t help but letting loose a giggle if you see this on the course.

We have a favorite killdeer on the course. Her name is Sunshine because she has brought the most laughter to us. Sunshine has come back and visited us for many years on The Oaks Course and this year we saw she laid eggs!

Sunshine is basically a resident of The Oaks Course. She loves to strut around on the course when she thinks no one is looking. We think if she were a human she would be a model because she has the strut down!  She likes to strut near the pond that Coco the Catfish lives in. We guess this is because they have become good friends.

If you see Sunshine on the course make sure to tip your hat to her. You will know her from the other killdeer because she is the most familiar with the course. We can’t wait until her eggs hatch and we can see her little family.

Karens Corner- What PGA Sponsored Tournaments has Gary Played In?

The balls rolled towards the ocean- GaryGary Miller has been around golf for most of his life. He has spent 20 years off and on playing the sport; and for the last twelve years he has been in the golf business. His golf prowess is close to being unmatched in the metro- Atlanta region of Georgia.  We are proud to call him our new golf pro at The Oaks Course due to his outstanding achievements.

Gary has worked at Reynolds Plantation, one of the most famous courses in the country, for the past 12 years. He has been on every course down there.  While he loved his time up at Reynolds, he is excited to join us at The Oaks Course. He said that working on a public course reminds him of what he grew up on and that he has a warm place in the heart for it.

While working at Reynolds Plantation, Gary competed in some tournaments sponsored by the PGA. In 2012 he competed in Monterey, California. Then last year he competed in a national tournament held in West Palm Beach, Florida. He noted that in Monterey he had to be mindful of the ocean while putting because grass tends to grow toward water.   All of his experience with golf has taught Gary that customer service is key.

Gary said “I am passionate about both playing and customer service. I want to give people the feeling that they want to come back.” After visiting and working at many golf courses Gary knows how to be supreme in customer service.

Nancy Schulz, on Gary’s employment, said, “he brings a expertise and a high level of customer service to us. He came highly recommended not only from golf professionals but from vendors and customers as well.”

If you want any advice on your swing Gary is happy to help! On August 16th he will be helping people on the driving range with their swing. He has had a lot of experience in his 20 years of golfing. If you ever want to hear some of his stories, you can find him on The Oaks Course!
