Help Benefit the Community at the 24th Annual Bill Taylor Golf Classic

It is almost time for the Newton Medical Center Auxiliary’s 24th Annual Bill Taylor Classic Golf Tournament at The Oaks Course! The Tournament will be held on October 17th, and it is already guaranteed to be an amazing time. One of the best things about this tournament is it benefits our community. Registration is still open and only costs $160.

The tournament is a great way to give back to the community. All proceeds from the tournament will benefit Newton Medical Center. The Newton Citizen reports that the Auxiliary has raised many gifts for the hospital over the years, including; equipment for digital mammography, fetal monitoring, and portable X-rays. At The Oaks Course, we hope that the tournament will raise enough to give them another gift this year!

In the Newton Citizen, Richard Brown said, “This golf tournament is for the community. It’s not because you’re a golfer or not a golfer, it’s an opportunity to support your community hospital.”

You don’t just have to be a member of the community to participate in the tournament. The tournament also offers many sponsorship levels for businesses to get involved.  There is gold, silver, and the ability to put sponsorships on the beverage carts, driving range, putting green, individual holes, or the tee box.

We hope to see a big turn out for the Bill Taylor Classic Golf Tournament. Not only does this tournament benefit our community, but it also is a fun time for participants. If you would like to register, please contact Andrea Lane, director of volunteer services, at (770)788-6553. If you cannot reach her there her email is, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. We hope to see you at the tourney!

Come Celebrate The Oaks 25th Birthday!

The Oaks 25th CelebrationCelebrating a birthday is a big milestone in a person’s year. Everyone looks forward to their birthday; they receive presents, cake, and warm hugs from everyone. Here at The Oaks Course we are proud to celebrate The Oaks 25th birthday this year!!

Did you know that the land on which The Oaks Course resides has been a golf course since the 1930’s?  Or, that in 1989 The Oaks Course we know today was actually born?. The renovation of the first 9 holes was complete in August 1989, and the remaining nine holes opened on October 25th, 1989. That’s why we have chosen to begin our celebration in October! However, unlike only celebrating for one day like most birthdays, we are going to celebrate with our specials the whole year!

We are going to have many special deals going on for our 25th birthday.

To start with, we are holding “Golf like its 1989”!  For the entire month of October, guests will be able to receive the same prices they would receive in 1989. This means on the weekends from open until 3pm you can play a round of golf for $39.50 plus taxes. Then during the weekdays from open to 3pm you can play a round for $28.97 plus taxes. If this isn’t the best deal on golf you have heard in a long time, we don’t know what is!

We will also be having a membership special. For only $300, you can play golf anytime, any day  for the  remainder of 2014! While your cart fee isn’t included, we are sure you can see that this is an amazing deal.

We hope to see you at The Oaks Course for our 25th anniversary celebration! We know we are going to be spending the year celebrating with our birthday hats on so we hope we can share that celebration with you.

Karens Corner- High School Reunion at The Oaks Course

We recently hosted the Newton County Class of 2004’s ten year high school reunion. It was a great time for the guest who attended. It was fun to watch all the people who haven’t seen each other in ten years get together and reminisce about the years they had together when adulthood seemed so far away. It has been a long time since I received my diploma, but I still remember every minute of that day.

I have never gotten the opportunity to attend one of my reunions; that should give you a clue that there have been several. I think ten years would be the hardest, because you still want to impress the people you went to school with. I get shivers down my spine thinking about it. All I can think about is someone pulling out pictures of big hair and my majorette uniform with my thighs. It is enough to send me running and screaming “Don’t look at that, I thought I looked great, and clearly I was wrong”. After the tenth, you start to realize “who cares”.

I do think the tradition of reunions is great, regardless of any embarrassing pictures. The great thing about getting older is the ability to laugh at yourself. In order to look forward you have to look back. Those moments you shared have influenced you in a positive way and yes, sometimes negative. Regardless, it is a part of your life and should be remembered and celebrated.

Tell us some of your reunion stories on our Facebook page or Twitter; it is always fun to hear about other’s experiences. We need to laugh every day. I can’t wait to hear from you.

Karens Corner- Why We Love Knickers at The Oaks Course

Rickie Fowler recently wore knickers in the U.S. Open to honor his idol, Payne Stewart. He has certainly caused a sensation in the golf world; as well as the rest of the population. Knickers have always been prominent in the history of golf. The reasons why are many, but here are a few that I found interesting.

  • Since the 17th century, people have been wearing knickers for various activities. They were very popular with one group of Dutch colonists. They quickly became popular when the New York Knickerbockers adopted them as part of their uniform in 1842. They became mainstream fashion after Edward VII wore them to the United States in 1924. It was then; they became a part of the golfing world. The style waned in the thirties, but now that Rickie has brought back the swagger in golf, we are sure to see more.
  • Knickers make a statement, a look that says “I know I’m good, and I am going to prove it to you.” Knickers have a loser fit that allows more mobility, that doesn’t exist in today’s golf fashion. The material of today is made to keep the golfer cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. It is a more comfortable fit, but it doesn’t have the flair of knickers, accessorized with a pair of argyle socks and a sweater.
  • The advantages of today’s knickers are at least you won’t pass out on the course with a heat stroke or have a rash from the wool of knickers of old. These are important facts, we want you to have fun, play well and put your swagger back in golf.

In the twenty or more years we have been in business, we have seen a wide variety of styles, but our favorite is the knickers. What’s your favorite style?  Let us know, we love hearing from our readers.

Ladybugs on the Greens

A lot of people admire the healthiness of our greens at The Oaks Course. We had David give some yard tips, but we thought we would give you an idea from Art Days to decorate your garden! No garden is ever complete without the perfect decoration and this one is perfect for any golfing family.

Did you have a favorite bug when you were younger? I remember I would always love to hold ladybugs in my hand. My favorite part of going out to my family garden was getting to visit the ladybugs; I would give them all individual names!

Well this simple craft will let you keep a family of ladybugs in your garden at all times!

Its simple all you need is golf balls, primer, acrylic paint, paintbrushes, and sharpies.

First you prime the golf balls with a white primer and let it dry. This will make it so the golf ball brand doesn’t show through the paint. Then with a paintbrush, you paint the whole golf ball red. Then let it dry completely. When it is dry, you can use the sharpie to draw dots, wings, and eyes.

Then when your beautiful creation is complete, you can put it out in your garden. This craft is easy enough that if you want you can share the job with your kids for a fun after school activity. They will love creating a family of ladybugs to be shown off in your yard.

If you come visit us at The Oaks Course, let us know what you named your ladybug family. We love to hear the stories you bring in to tell us!
